A  thrown and altered oval stoneware dish/bowl with a handle. Decorated using coloured slips, paper resist and brushed glazes.  The underside is painted with a single dark slip which is also used on the handle. It sits at a slightly tipped angle  with the highest part of the rim at a point when displayed with the bird flying from left to right. This is typical of the asymmetry contained within the work which John made. A maker's mark 'MALTBY' is painted in an iron oxide underneath.
